Palitana known as ‘The City of Jain Temples,’ is located in the foothills of Shatrunjaya in Gujarat.
There are approximately 863 exquisite temples, elegantly carved in white marble.
The cluster of Jain temples on top of the Shatrunjaya Hill were built some 900 years ago starting from the 11th century.
The temple complex of Palitana is the world’s largest and is considered the most sacred pilgrimage place by the Jains around the world.
From the foot of the hill to the top there are more than 3,800 stone steps cut into rocks to facilitate climbing.
Surprisingly, no one is allowed including the priests to stay overnight in this city of temples as it has been constructed for the divine to reside. This place is filled with the soothing fragrance of jasmine shrubs and offers outstanding views from hill top.
