2023 was a year where we appeared to take a great leap forward in bringing artificial intelligence (AI) into our daily lives. It brought into conversation how much our lives may change in the near future with systems that can think, feel and even grow. Yet while there may be clear concerns, there are also reasons to be optimistic for what this might mean. Many new forms of AI are already doing so much to support humanity and make the incredibly complex simple. We’ve put together a list of 2023 AI inventions that are both exciting and praiseworthy for you below:
1. In India and Africa, TrailGuard AI is being used to detect poachers and monitor endangered species. Within as little as 30 seconds, tiny cameras which identify poachers or animals of interest, like tigers, can tell authorities allowing for a quicker response where necessary.
2. Meta, the parent company for Facebook, released SeamlessM4T AI which can translate text and/or speech from over 100 languages in real time. Not only can it can decipher speech and text at the same time, it can even translate when multiple languages are used in the same sentence.
3. FeaturePrint is an optical AI technology which could be our solution to a multibillion dollar counterfeit problem. By analysing a photo of the object, the AI reviews tiny surface details of the item and compares them with the original to tell you if they’re a fake or not.
4. Parky is an autonomous electric vehicle recharging robot. You can call the mobile robot to your parking spot through a connecting unit and the robot finds its way to you and plugs itself in to start charging your car.
5. In the US state of California, AI is being used to stop wildfires. Wildfire cameras are equipped with artificial intelligence technology to detect early signs of fire and other anomalies and report to emergency personnel. Cal Fire uses a network of more than 1000 cameras across the state. Over three months, 40% of fires were detected by AI before an emergency call was received.
