A bridge in Japan can often act as a rollercoaster for drivers. The 44 metre high Eshima Ohashi bridge can unwittingly take passengers by surprise because of its sharp incline and decline. Without enough space to widen the bridge due to abrupt embankments on either side, there was little compromise in order to allow ships to pass underneath. The 5.1 and 6.1 gradients mean that drivers on the bridge receive a wide panoramic view as they pass between the cities of Matsue and Sakaiminato. Whatever happens, the cheap thrills of terrifying excitement are always a possibility when crossing the mile long bridge.
