The history of the bicycle

The bicycle has perhaps been taken over by automobiles and planes in recent years for transportation purposes. However, it too is quite recent as it has only this year celebrated 200 years of use.

In 1817, it was invented by as the ‘running machine’ as a high powered replacement for a horse. Although it did have the same look of a modern day bicycle, it had no pedals so it was propelled by running instead.

bicycleOne of the first models to be called a ‘bicycle’ was invented in the 1870s with a high front wheel and a metal seat with pedals. The modern day version with similar sized wheels was invented in the 1880s. Of course, popularity skyrocketed in the 20th century with further improvements arriving in the form of a scooter, motorcycle, mountain bikes and those used for extreme sports.
